DRIP TRIP: GARRISON BROTHERS IN HYE

Just down the road in Hye is Garrison Brothers, the first and oldest legal bourbon distillery in Texas. Much-lauded since they poured their first sip, their Texas Straight Bourbon Whiskey typically sells out as soon as it hits store shelves. To make their Texas bourbon, Garrison Brothers uses corn from the Texas Panhandle and organic winter wheat they grow at their ranch in Hye.

For those hankering for a sip and a fun "Drip trip," Garrison Brothers offers tours at the distillery where you'll learn the process from "corn to cork," tour the stillhouse, sample right from the stills, and, finally, taste a small sample in the barrel barn. Even if you're not a bourbon drinker (like one or two in our party), the tour is interesting and impressive and we'll definitely be taking it again when visitors come  to town. From the intersection of RR 12 and 290, the distillery is about 45 minutes down 290 heading toward Fredericksburg. The tours are on certain days of the week and at defined times, so be sure to check their website for the latest "Sit and Sip Tours" details. For much more information, visit garrisonbros.com.
