TRAVIS GARNETT'S "VOICES OF HAYS COUNTY HISTORY" TONIGHT (THURSDAY) AT DS LIBRARY

Travis Garnett, a former Dripping Springs City Councilman and 40-year veteran of the city's Fire Department will be featured in the next "Voices of Hays County History" series of oral history interviews sponsored by the Hays County Historical Commission (HCHC). The free video screening of the Garnett oral history will be presented tonight, Thursday, at 6:30pm at the Dripping Springs Library, located at 501 Sportsplex Drive.

Mr. Garnett  was born in 1926 in Dripping Springs, where his father operated a blacksmith shop on Mercer Street. Only 15 years old when Pearl Harbor was attacked, Garnett was drafted into the U.S. Navy in 1944 at the age of 18, after graduating from high school in Dripping Springs.

He returned home from the war in 1946 and married Lois Erlene Huey. The Garnetts had three sons: Gary, Bill, and Danny.  Mrs. Garnett passed away in August 2008.

Garnett worked at the Humble gas station, moving it in 1955 into his father's old Gulf building. He later opened the 5G garage beside his home.

Always active in the life of his native city, Garnett drove a school bus and served several terms on the Dripping Springs City Council, in addition to his work at the gas station and as a mechanic. He also served 40 years with the Dripping Springs Fire Department and has been on the city's water board for 30 years.

On his video, Garnett talks among other things about early life in Dripping Springs, his long-time interest in restoring cars, and playing dominoes at the Rinky Dink Domino Hall.
