THERE'S A NEW SHERIFF IN TOWN (OR WILL BE ON MONDAY)
On Monday, Gary Cutler will officially assume the duties of Hays County Sheriff. There’s a provision in state law that allows an elected official for an office that is currently held by an appointee to take office after the votes have been canvassed and a certificate of election issued. The canvass report is planned for a special meeting of our Commissioners Court on November 15 at the Hays County Courthouse. According to the provision, after that is done, a newly elected official has the option of taking office any time prior to the standard January 1 swearing-in date for newly elected officials. The current Hays County Sheriff, Tommy Ratliff, was appointed by the Commissioners Court to fill an unexpired term following the death of then-Sheriff Allen Bridges in December 2008.
