DSES PARTNERS IN READING SUCCESS PROGRAM SEEKS MENTORS

Books read as kids shaped our lives and our view of the world. One dog in our family can thank a certain Victorian author for her name. The ability to read affects everything we do, from the moment we turn on the television in the morning and read the scrolling news ticker, to late at night when we read one last email before logging off. Reading is our life and a never-ending gift because someone took the time to teach us how to read. To help students in need of a bit of an assist when it comes to reading, last spring the Dripping Springs Elementary School (DSES) PTA launched Partners in Reading Success (PIRS), a reading mentor program that pairs a student with an adult volunteer. Because the launch was a such a success, the PIRS program is now seeking more volunteers for the 2010-2011 school year.

PIRS matches a students in need of help with reading with adult volunteer reading mentors for one hour each week throughout the school year. Students have the opportunity to hear stories and practice reading while experiencing one-on-one time with a caring adult. Mentors enjoy getting to know their student and watching them improve over the course of the school year, as well as the satisfaction of knowing they are making a real difference in a child’s life.

PIRS will meet every Friday morning with sessions from 8:00-9:00AM and 9:00-10:00AM. Initial mentor orientations will be held Friday, September 17 at 8:00AM and 9:00AM.  If you are interested in the program but unable to commit to a regular schedule, PIRS also seek volunteers to serve as substitutes for those occasions when regular mentors have a conflict or vacation, etc.
