THE HEAT IS ON

Condensation for plantsWe have been quite fortunate this summer. Hard to believe we made it to August before the thermometer hovered near triple digits. With A/Cs now working overtime, the Rainwater Revival folks posted this easy conservation tip on their Facebook page: Put a bucket under that A/C condensation line and you'll end up with a few gallons of water for your plants every day.

While most of us are lucky enough to have A/C to cool these hot days, for others, these temperatures can be life-threatening. Statistics show that more people in the United States die from extreme heat exposure than from hurricanes, lightning, tornadoes, floods, and earthquakes combined. As we first reported in May, Family Eldercare is holding their 20th Annual Summer Fan Drive to collect donations of new fans and new window air conditioners to bring relief from the scorching summer temperatures to low income and medically fragile residents. The fan drive will be conducted through August 31, and partnering this year with Family Eldercare are the Driftwood Fire Department and Dripping Springs Fire Department (400 Sportsplex Drive), among others. You can drop new 20-inch box fans and 12-inch or larger oscillating fans at those locations. Air conditioners are available on a limited basis to those with serious medical conditions. For more information about the fan drive, or to make a financial contribution, visit familyeldercare.org.

This is a wonderful blog, and this water conservation idea is great- I keep a large plant saucer under mine that my chickens drink from all the time- it's fresh and refills itself!
