DRIPPING FOOD: BREAKFAST AT HILL COUNTRY KITCHEN

Growing up, our family rarely went out to eat. We’ve always been cook at home types — which is why we cannot wait for the Dripping Springs Farmers Market to start in March — but we do venture out now and again. Because we do so much of our own cooking, it took us a while to get to Hill Country Kitchen. The restaurant has been under new ownership for quite some time, but we only recently made our inaugural visit for a weekend breakfast and we shouldn’t have waited so long.
Aromas of maple, vanilla, and cinnamon greeted us at the door and, if we weren’t ready for breakfast before, that certainly put us in the mood. The restaurant appears absolutely immaculate and is cheery-homey-country cute without trying too hard. Christopher Plummer, who played Captain Von Trapp, once described the Sound of Music like being beaten to death with a Hallmark card. Hill Country Kitchen does not knock you over the head with a cracker barrel and a corncob pipe. Our waiter, Mario, could not have been more of a delight. He was the perfect measure of upbeat and attentive.
One of us followed the maple, vanilla, and cinnamon trail and ordered French Toast ($5.65) which was attractively presented, received an endorsement of “very good” and, we learned, is made from sourdough bread from a small German bakery in Kyle.
Two of us opted for the Hill Country Benedict ($8.75), a Tex-Mex-country riff on eggs benedict. A toasted English muffin is topped with scrambled eggs, bacon, sliced tomato and finished with melted queso and sliced avocado. We had an option of hash browns or country potatoes, and we both went for the latter that proved to be a nice smallish dice, crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, and jazzed up with some spice and onions. We did not lose our membership in the clean plate club (they had us at queso). The English muffin also deserves special mention as it never became that unfortunate rubbery texture that afflicts far too many benedicts.
We all left wonderfully happy and content and ready for a day of Olympics-watching. We’re sorry it took us so long to get there Hill Country Kitchen, but we’ll be back sooner rather than later.
