4H AND FFA BUYERS GROUP: A PRIMER

Following up on our post about Karen Ford's Buyers Group for the Dripping 4H and FFA kids at the upcoming Hays County Youth Livestock Show, local Ag Booster Melodie Greider (of Stickhorse Studios fame) offers up information on how the buyers groups work:

"Putting money in a kitty to buy (or 'add on' to bids) for the kid's 'projects' doesn't mean you'll be taking home a cow, goat, rabbit, chicken or (gasp!) hog. It used to be that way, but not anymore. The money the kids make generally goes towards buying another project for next year. Raising animals is an expensive and time consuming commitment.

"And, having been there and done that, I also want to add that raising a project is one heck of a character building exercise. The animals require total dedication—regardless. These kids can't just decide they'd rather stay inside and play video games because it's too cold or hot or muddy and they don't feel like feeding or mucking out stalls. They are dedicated, committed, and work very hard on their projects, day in day out. Effort like that needs to be rewarded, and that's what the livestock show is about.

"4H, FFA, and DS AG Boosters (who also raise money to bid on projects and award scholarships to graduating seniors) are deserving of the community's support. Even a few dollars can mean a lot.

"I might add, too, that if you like to eat (and most of us do) then supporting these kids now ensures that some of them, at least, will grow up and keep producing it!"

Thank you, Melodie!
