THESE ARE A FEW OF OUR FAVORITE THINGS: THE BABBLE'S 9 FAVORITE THINGS IN DRIPPING SPRINGS IN 2009
This willbe our last post for 2009, so to recap and cap off we present The Babble's 9 Favorite Things in Dripping Springs in 2009 ...
#2-9 (in no particular order)...
DRIPPING SPRINGS FARMERS MARKET
Launching a farmers market on the cusp of summer that would deliver a historical drought might have defeated lesser people, but not our local farmers and producers. What a treat it was every first and third Saturday to have the opportunity to buy locally grown and harvested food. Thank you to Marianne of Onion Creek Farm, Darrell of Bella Verdi Farms, the Twin County Lamb and Red Barn Beef folks, and all the wonderful others for doing what you do. We can't wait for March! Also, special cheers to Jo Ann Touchstone from the City who showed us that it is possible to be both weather-practical and super-stylish in our Saturday morning market attire.
HILL COUNTRY SENIOR CITIZENS THRIFT SHOP
The Babbler's family is thrifty.Perhaps it's our Scottish roots, or maybe we're just cheap, but we've always taken great pride in bragging about how little we paid for something. Thrift stores are our meccas and, thusly, we are regular browsers, and often buyers, at the Hill Country Senior Citizens Thrift Shop here in Dripping. Like any good thrift shop, the place is always packed with merchandise and takes a thrifty shopper's patience and determination to sift through, but, oh, the rewards! Read our original thrift shop post here.
THURSDAY NIGHTS AT ROLLING IN THYME & DOUGH
Babble readers are well aware of our love for Thyme & Dough, and if you haven't done one of their Thursday nights, you are missing something special. While live music played in the Bloom garden, what a treat it was every Thursday to discover a new dish. From Waterzooi and Carbonades Flamandes to Ratatouille and Chicken Taj Mahal, we could feel a world way without even crossing " the Y". (Note: No Thursday night at T&D on New Year's Eve).
PURE LUCK'S CHEESE VICTORY
In August, for the first time ever, the American Cheese Society awards — the Golden Globes and Oscars of cheese — were held in Texas and in Austin, no less. In a competition featuring over a thousand cheeses, Dripping's own Pure Luck Farm and Dairy brought home three awards (including 2 first place ribbons!).
DRIPPING SPRINGS LIBRARY CHATS
On Thursdays evenings our terrific Dripping Springs Community Library presented a variety of free, informative chats. We learned about native plants, Texas history, Wine 101, space, honeybees and so much more.
SORGHUM HARVEST
This summer, Onion Creek Farm harvested "Honey Drip"Sweet Sorghum, an heirloom variety of sorghum originally grown by folks in this area in the early 1900s. Just before the first light of day on July 17, friends gathered in the sorghum fields of Onion Creek Farm to begin the three day process of making sorghum syrup or "molasses".Melanie Cambron not only worked the field and stirred the syrup, she captured, in a sweet pictorial, a harvest that captured our heart. View the pictorial here.
BUBBY'S BISCUITS JAR REFILS
As evidenced by our weekly PAWS Dog of the Week and frequent mentions of our own muttley crew, we love dogs. We also love local and organic which is why we're fans of Bubby Biscuits, a family owned Dripping business that makes 100% organic dog biscuits. This year, Bubby started their Reuse and Recycle plan by selling treats in glass jars that could be returned when empty and refilled (at a reduced price).
THE RETURN OF RAIN
After a historic drought this summer that sucked spirits, dried up creeks, and ravaged farms, ranches and front yards, the rain returned. The rain returned!
