DRIPPING BIRDS: CALLIOPE HUMMINGBIRD

Our friend and local birder extraordinaire, Howard Williams, had a Calliope hummingbird show up at his feeders. According to Howard, almost every year there are a couple reports of Calliopes appearing in Central Texas, but this was a first for him.

These hummers are considered high mountain birds, but they found their way to Dripping Springs! According to the Audobon Society, the Calliope is "the smallest breeding bird in North America and the smallest long-distance avian migrant in the world! This 3.25" long pollinator travels some 9,000 km round-trip on migration from northwestern U.S. and southwestern Canada to south-central Mexico"
