DRIPPING LOSES A BRIGHT STAR
When you look up at the sky tonight and marvel at the stars, you can thank a new star that shines among them. On Saturday, Dripping Springs resident, famed astronomer, and "dark sky" advocate John Gregory was killed in a car wreck. His wife Carolyn who was in the car with him remains in intensive care in Austin.
One history of telescope design begins with James Gregory, a 1663 Scottish mathematician, and ends with John Gregory, father of the Gregory Maksutov telescope design.
Mr. Gregory was a passionate crusader for "dark sky" regulations to prevent light pollution. Thanks to efforts like his we can all still enjoy the heavens above.
The 18-year-old driving the pickup that drifted across the center turn lane on 620 and crashed into the Gregory car has been charged with criminally negligent homicide.
