HAYS COUNTY MEETING ON PROPOSED MCGREGOR LANE BRIDGE SET FOR NOVEMBER 12

Hays County Precinct 4 Commissioner Karen Ford invites interested citizens to a public meeting on planned improvements to the low water crossing at McGregor Lane and Martin Road. The meeting is scheduled for Thursday, November 12 at 7:00PM at the Precinct 4 office on Roger Hanks Parkway.

“This is one of Hays County’s most dangerous road segments with the curve, the hill, the T-intersection and the deteriorating crossing over Barton Creek,” said Commissioner Ford. “We have a plan to add a two-lane bridge and smooth the road curve, which will solve many chronic safety problems at this key intersection.” DSISD buses pass over this low water crossing more 14 times a day carrying an average of 217 children to and from school.

Currently, a two-year storm event can cause the crossing to be topped by Barton Creek and closed to traffic, as it was on Monday, October 26. The County has worked with Halff and Associates to study, survey and engineer the new design that will handle up to a 50-year flood event. The improvement plan for this segment of McGregor Lane began in 2006 with a cultural and environmental study of the creek and surrounding area.

“We want to share with the public not only the planned improvements, but also the timeline and our reasoning behind the traffic management plan during construction,” said Ford. “People will be inconvenienced when the roadway is closed for construction and need to know when, why and be prepared. You can’t have a major road construction such as this without some inconvenience.”

Construction is set to begin in April 2010 with completion in September 2010. The roadway improvement has an estimated price tag of $1.2 million. “The construction has not been bid out yet, and we hope to see it come in under the estimate as have most all of our recent road construction projects,” said Jerry Borcherding, director of Hays County Resource Protection, Transportation and Planning department. “We are also seeking State or federal grant monies to help fund a portion of the project.”

For those who cannot make the official public meeting on November 12, Commissioner Ford will hold open office hours on Friday, November 13 from 3:00PM to 5:00PM. to share plans and discuss the McGregor bridge project with interested citizens.

I live out on McGregor Ln., and another really dangerous situation is when people treat the low water crossing like it has two lanes. More and more often, someone will try to cross even though an oncoming car is already on it. CRAZY!
