THE SALT LICK GOES VEGAS
As long-time readers of the Babble may know, our GiGi and PawPaw lived in Driftwood (they owned the Driftwood General Store at one one time where this Babbler and her sister spent summers drinking ice cold Cokes and eating too many Cracker Jacks on the house — it pays to have connections!). Our Great Aunt Mable lived in the old Mason building next to the "Methodist" church (back in the day, it actually rotated Sundays — one Sunday Baptist, next Sunday Methodist and so on). And when we all piled in the truck to go to the Salt Lick, it was just a little ol' place that sold BBQ, surrounded by cows and half-licked salt blocks. We knew the Salt Lick had expanded to the airport and various other locations around Austin, but not until we read Sunset Magazine's "10 Best Classics in Las Vegas" did we know it had gone Vegas, baby!

I love hearing this type of thing. My grandma used to own or lease that same store on the corner of 150 and ??? right next to the post office and across from the church. She had an antique shop there for years. How lovely and my what a small town we live in. What great history!

You know, I think they closed the Las Vegas Salt Lick. It opened in 2007(?), but if you go directly to the hotel page, it's no longer listed as a restaurant option, and one reviewer angrily notes that it's been closed down. It's probably better to keep it our local secret anyway!
