HAYS COUNTY ANNOUNCES FREE RESIDENTIAL TIRE DISPOSAL DAY

Hays County will give residents the opportunity to help the environment and spruce up their lawns and garages by offering free disposal of unwanted vehicle tires on Saturday, October 24. The County is working in conjunction with the nonprofit Central Texas Resource Conservation and Development Area, Inc., which is supplying grant money from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.

“Unused tires can be breeding grounds for mosquitoes, rodents and snakes and are so durable they remain unchanged and take up large amounts of space virtually forever in a landfill,” said Jerry Pinnix, director of Recycling and Solid Waste for Hays County. “However, tires can be successfully reused in a number of ways as well as shredded and recycled into outdoor furniture, road and landscaping materials and other products.”

Bring up to 10 unwanted tires (20” or smaller rim size) per household  to the Hays County Precinct 4 Recycling Center, 20290 FM 150 West at Darden Hill Road, on October 24 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. for free recycling – no need to leave your vehicle as the tires will be unloaded for you.

If your household has more than 10 tires, a $2 per tire fee will be charged for the additional tires, which is the usual fee at the facility. The facility does not accept tires from businesses or commercial activities, tires with rims or solid- or foam-filled tires.

“After evaluating the success of this event, we’ll look at the possibility of having similar tire recycling days in other areas of the county,” Pinnix said.
