DRIPPING CHIGGERS

Chigger season has arrived
in full force. Last week's rains have the grass growing and the chiggers jumping. A few in the Babble family seem to attract chiggers more than others. They make the argument that it's because they're sweeter than the rest of us (yawn), but whatever the reason, during this time of year none of us make an outside move without chigger protection. We have tested a few all natural bug sprays that promise chigger protection, but we always come back to dusting sulphur.

For control of chiggers in your yard, it is advised you should dust the lawn a day or two before "protection is needed" and repeat at weekly intervals. For those without traditional lawns or who tend to tromp around many acres of land, we're believers in the sulphur in a sock method. Experts have told us that sulphur doesn't work as effectively this way, but since we began pouring sulphur into an old used sock and banging it around our ankles and legs before heading out on our latest adventure, the chigger bites have reduced significantly. This has not been a scientific study (and perhaps we're all just getting less sweet), but summer isn't summer without a sock of sulphur near the back door.

We checked with Elizabeth at Bloom and she has just gotten in bags of dusting sulphur. You can get a 4 pound bag for $8.99 which will dust 1,500 to 2,000 square feet or — and we're estimating here — fill a summertime of socks.

No matter what chigger protections you take, if you live in the Hill Country and leave your home at some point, even dusted with sulphur, there is still a good chance you'll get bitten. If that happens, we're believers in the Edith method of chigger relief — crush an aspirin in alcohol and rub on the bite.

Trivial aside — brimstone is sulphur. "Raining fire and brimstone"? Scary. "Raining fire and sulphur"? Smelly.

Hi, Nice to see some else promote the virtues of sulfur. Nice going. I did run across another site that has saved my life and my family also from the ravages of chigger bites.

I am not going to tell you want it is because they deserve the few bucks they get for the great package they put out.

But I can tell you it does work and it works fast and is pretty much permanent.
