PEC BOARD ELECTIONS
Since the summer of 2007, when a Pedernales Electric Cooperative member-led
lawsuit was filed against the utility amidst complaints of closed-door
practices, PEC has been rocked by revelations of purported Enronesque behavior
by top-level officials who have since resigned. Further, state lawmakers Rep. Patrick
Rose (D) of Dripping Springs and Sen. Troy Fraser (R) of Horshoe Bay have
pushed legislation forcing member-owned utilities, such as PEC, to follow open
records and meetings requirements. In the wake of these shake-ups comes the
second ever "real" democratic election in the history of the coop, and the
first time that the majority of the sitting Board will be comprised of
Directors who have been elected by the membership.
Beginning tomorrow, Wednesday, May 6, ballots are to be mailed out to PEC members and voting is to take place through June 12. The election is at-large, so every PEC member is entitled to vote for a candidate in each of the three districts.
In District 1, candidates are Mark A. Mayfield, Bill Wilcox, Cristi Clement, and Sandra P. "Sandy" Jenkins.
In District 6, there are 6 candidates for the Board: Theresa Rourke, Larry Landaker, Linda Kaye Rogers, Robbi Boone, David Bethancourt, and Daryl Losaw.
And in District 7, Patrick Cox, Ph.D, runs unopposed.
Members can vote one of three ways: on the mail-in ballot received in the mail, through the PEC website, or in person at the Annual Meeting on June 20 in Johnson City. Even if you plan to vote online, keep your ballot forms because you will need the numbers printed on the forms for online voting.
Note: PEC4U, a watchdog group of PEC members, sent us their candidate endorsements for each of the three districts as follows: District 1 – Cristi Clement, District 6 – Larry Landaker, and District 7 – Dr. Patrick Cox (unopposed). Update 5-13-09: We've been made aware that Larry Landaker has also been endorsed David Allen Hall.

Update 5-13-09: We've been made aware that Larry Landaker has also been endorsed David Allen Hall.

Beginning May 7th, PEC members will receive their ballots for this year’s election. I urge that you cast your vote for Cristi Clement in District 1, Larry Landaker in District 6 and Patrick Cox in District 7. In making this request, I join with the PEC4U Steering Committee in endorsing each of these candidates.
Since seeking the Advisory Director seat for District 5 last year, I have remained involved in member efforts to achieve reforms and improvements at our cooperative. The 3 current board members I ran with last year as a member of the CORE candidates’ coalition – Patrick Cox, Kathy Scanlon and Charlie Tesar - have been instrumental in the gains of this year. I am honored to have been able to continue working with them over the past year. Based on that experience I am particularly sensitive to the critical nature of this year’s election. We can make great strides forward, as the “old guard” is set to lose its voting majority. However, there are several among this year’s candidates who share many of the attitudes of that old guard and their same lack of appropriate experience. What we have gained we can now, all too easily, lose.
I endorse Cristi Clement and Larry Landaker without reservation. Among the candidates, they are the best experienced in areas most important to the job of directing PEC. They each bring the deepest understanding of the issues confronting our cooperative and look on those issues with the strongest commitment to serving the interests of members - in all cases.
Although Patrick Cox is running unopposed after completing Bud Burnett’s 1-year unexpired term, I urge that you also cast your vote for him as a demonstration of your support. Dr. Cox has consistently fought, with considerable skill and courage, for the rights and interests of members. He has earned a resounding vote of confidence, and I hope you will give that to him with your vote on the ballot.
If you agree with me, please tell your friends, family and neighbors who are PEC members about Cristi and Larry and ask them to cast their votes for these two excellent candidates. Also ask them to show continuing support for Patrick with their vote.
You can read the PEC4U Press Release announcing their candidate endorsements at http://pec4u.org/?p=224.

The only house the pec4u watchdogs are guarding is their own. They neither solicit input from PEC members nor do they represent the interests of the entire PEC membership.
I urge all voters to vote for independent candidates rather than the pec4u candidates. Larry Landaker does not attend board meetings and has no expertise in the area of utility management. Cristi Clement, as witnessed in the board meetings she does attend, is constantly told what to do and think by her pec4u handlers. The only candidates who do regularly attend meetings and have demonstrated true knowledge about cooperative issues and that we can trust to fairly represent all PEC members above a special interest group are Linda Kaye Rogers, Mark Mayfield, Sandy Jenkins.
Dave Collins, who above is endorsing these pec4u candidates, is a failed candidate from last year. The PEC members have already decided he is not qualified to be on the board therefore we should be very suspicious of his recommendations and continued attempts to manipulate cooperative policy.
