Lettuce is never the star of the sandwich show, rather, it is more often than
not a mere tool of self-delusion (look at the healthy green vegetable I’m
eating, the one just above the smoked meat product and just below the white
bread and mayonnaise), or it serves solely as a soggy sandwich protection
measure, inserted between absorbent bread and juicy tomato. Rare is the lettuce
that makes you sit up and take notice. Rare is the lettuce that makes the
sandwich. But, recently, we had a sandwich made with alettuce that made the
sandwich. Soft yet crisp and a brilliant green, it tasted, not like crunchy
water, but alive, and fresh and, apparently, like lettuce. Who knew? And who
knew the lettuce would be grown hydroponically right here in Dripping Springs!
Our new favorite (probably our only ever favorite) lettuce is Live Butter Leaf
Lettuce grown by Bella Verdi Farms of Dripping Springs. Around here,
Brookshire Brothers in Wimberley carries Bella Verdi produce, as does
Greenling.com home delivery. The Bella Verdi folks are checking into additional Dripping outlets
and we’ll have an update when we get additional details.
