DRIPPING DOGS: MIGHTY TEXAS DOG WALK

Dripping's Texas Hearing and Service Dogs organization is holding its 11th Annual Mighty Texas Dog Walk on Saturday, April 11 in downtown Austin. This year, in addition of course, to benefiting THSD, there is another calling — to bring the Guinness World Record back to Texas! The  Brits hold the current record at 10,272 dogs. Perhaps they can beat us on odd potato chip flavors, but not massive dog walks!

To participate, it's $25 per dog if you pre-register or $30 the day of the event. Online pre-registration ends Tuesday, April 7. For more details including online registration link and time details, visit servicedogs.org/dogwalk09.

Texas Hearing and Service Dogs trains dogs to assist Texans living with hearing or mobility challenges. Thanks to benefits such as the Mighty Texas Dog Walk, and charitable donations, they are able to provide the dogs and training free of charge.

On the THSD campus, located right here in Dripping Springs, hearing dogs are trained to alert their deaf partners by touch and lead them to a variety of important everyday sounds, including a knock at the door, a smoke alarm, an alarm clock and a baby's cry. Service dogs assist physically challenged individuals by opening doors and refrigerators, fetching out of reach wheelchairs, retrieving dropped items, turning lights on and off, getting help and moving paralyzed limbs. They also perform customized tasks such as assistance with clothing and specialized equipment and some are trained to assist people with balance while walking, such as those who have had polio, strokes, or Parkinson's.

And, of course, all the dogs provide emotional and social benefits through companionship and encouragement of greater interaction from others.
Every dog in the program is adopted from an animal shelter or rescue group, plus occasional owner release.
