UPDATE @ 6:16PM from Howard: "Just like clockwork, a male Black-chinned show up a few minutes ago." They're here! Let the season begin!Local hummingbird expert and award-winning birder, Howard Williams, has given us a heads up on Black-chinned hummingbirds. His records for the last two years show the first spring arrivals on March 10 ('07) and March 14 ('08). Drippin' birders will want to have their hummingbird feeders up and ready to dole the sweet nectar right about now. Also, quite thrillingly, Ruby-throated hummers join the flying circus in mid-to-late March. Get ready for the season with these tips:
+ Homemade nectar recipe for your feeder: 1 part cane sugar dissolved in 4 parts water (NO red dye). Honey or artificial sweeteners should never be used.
+ Change nectar solution and clean feeders every 2 to 5 days (the hotter the temperatures, the sooner the solution needs to be changed).
+ With the current drought, numbers of birds visiting feeders and nectar gardens could be quite significant.
