DRIPPING TRASH: NOTES ON THE RECON DEAL (REDUX)

On March 3, we provided a few notes on our personal experience with the Recon deal. In short, if you live inside the city limits of Dripping Springs, you must use Recon as your trash collection service beginning April 1. Since our initial post, we've communicated with City staff, and, along with all other Dripping residents, received a letter from the City of Dripping Springs, plus a new postcard from Recon clarifiying that if you live outside the city limits, you are not required to use Recon.

In a hopefully simple and informative nutshell, here are the what, how, and why of the Recon deal:

What: If you live inside the City Limits of Dripping Springs, beginning April 1, you must use Recon for trash removal. If you do not already use Recon, you need to make the switch (if you want to continue having your trash removed).

How:
1) Call Recon to select the type of service you want. You should have received a letter from the City breaking down the various service options. If you did not, contact Recon for the options. Recon's number is (512) 894-4441.
2) The City suggests contacting your current trash removal service to confirm that you will be switching to Recon, per City requirement, and that you are discontinuing service effective April 1. If you have already pre-paid for time beyond April 1, your current service provider should refund the appropriate amount. If you have any difficulty in that regard, contact the City of Dripping Springs and they will make every effort to assist you.

Why:
Per the City, "the City Council believes that a chaotic garbage collection system without City enforcement of reasonable rules and procedures poses a health hazard and nuisance...(the purpose of) this (Recon) contract (is) to preserve quality of life by minimizing noise, odor, and litter related to garbage collection and to protect pedestrians and motorists by limiting the number of trucks operating near residences, parks, and schools. Issuing a single franchise reduces wear and tear on our streets and enables the City to negotiate a favorable rate for everyone."

We live in Sunset Canyon, and I called Recon to ask about switching to their service from IESI (so we can have recycling). Just wondering if the price deal that they are quoting for City of Dripping Springs residents, should be honored for the one street in our neighborhood that has an Austin address? Need help with a name of someone to speak with at Recon. Thank you so much. D Hilton
