PAWS DOG OF THE WEEK: COOKIE - REVISITED

We featured Cookie on February 10, taking the word of the PAWS staff on what a sweet and special dog she was but, on Sunday, two of us went to the current PAWS facility in Kyle to volunteer (the Dripping Springs facility is in the works) and we had the chance to meet Cookie face to face. The PAWS staff had not oversold her. Yes, when in her cage, she barks and acts crazy (like most of us would cooped up in a cage) but, just as the PAWS staff said, when you take her out on a leash she is a precious girl. We took her for a walk, and as soon as she stepped out of that cage she was a different dog. She was happy and playful, and good on the leash (just excited and sniffing around, so thrilled to be out in the sunshine). She flopped on her back so we would rub her tummy, her tongue happily lolling out the side of her mouth, and when we told her to "sit", she did so promptly. Good girl! All the dogs (and cats) we saw yesterday just about broke our hearts. There are dozens we could feature (and we will), but Cookie is truly a dog that just needs someone to give her a chance. She looks (and sounds) so tough in that cage, and most of us would judge this book by its menacing cover, but just take her out on a stroll. Give Cookie a chance and see if your heart doesn't crumble. |
