STARLIGHT'S BRIGHT STARS

Many central Texas high schools are without an orchestra program, but thanks to the Starlight Symphony, a non-profit community orchestra based in Wimberley, talented young musicians from Dripping Springs, Wimberley, Blanco, Fischer, Kyle and other local communities can express their musicality. Each year, the Starlight Symphony hosts a Young Artist Festival showcase, and awards a college scholarship to each of two winners.

This year one of Dripping's own, Wallis Currie-Wood, a Junior at Dripping Springs High School, was one of the winners. Along with fellow winner Jon Michael Perez, who will be playing an  Oboe concerto, Wallis will perform her winning violin solo, Mozart Concerto No. 3 in G Major at two upcoming Starlight Symphony performances, this Saturday evening in Fischer and on Sunday in Kyle.

Music and the arts are often the first programs to get cut when budget time rolls around, but thanks to organizations such as the Starlight Symphony and individual efforts such as Art Speaks here in Dripping, we'll have another generation of Frederic Chopins and Frida Kahlos.
