DRIPPING POLITICS: 3 CITY COUNCILMEN UP FOR RE-ELECTION

Last Tuesday, the City of Dripping Springs called for a city council election on Saturday, May 9, 2009. Three current councilmen (there are no women on our city council) are up for re-election: Bill Foulds, Spider Williams, and Santos Alba. If no one new files an application to be placed on the ballot by 5:00PM on March 9, 2009, the election is cancelled the next day and those three retain their seats.

As we understand it, the election notice was provided at the City Hall offices, on the City of Dripping Springs website (scroll around for Public Notices, click on that, then click on “Election Notice”), posted at the post office, and published in the February 12, 2009 issue of The News-Dispatch in the “Classifieds-Advertising” section under “Legal Notices” (look just under the ad for housecleaning services).

What the notice does not specifically spell out is the March 9, 2009 application deadline. That particular bit of information is found deep within election code. Thankfully, because we asked, the always kind and responsive City Secretary Jo Ann Touchstone spared us the agony of that legal drudgery* and provided us the deadline application date. Although the city council’s actions certainly impact those in the ETJ, residency in the city limits for a minimum of six months is required for eligibility.

No one has challenged a city council position in the last 2 years.

Applications to be placed on the ballot are availabe at City Hall (511 Mercer) or you can download here from the Secretary of State website.

If you or someone you know files an application to be placed on the ballot, please drop us a line at driptips@gmail.com.

*Gluttons for punishment, we nonetheless searched the code and believe we found it in the Texas Election Code, Title 9, Chapter 143, Section 143.007.
