HAMILTON POOL PLACED ON ENDANGERED LIST BY PRESERVATION TEXAS
Yesterday, on the steps of the Capitol, Preservation Texas, Inc., a statewide nonprofit organization that advocates for preserving the historic resources in Texas, named 11 sites to its sixth annual list of Texas’ Most Endangered Historic Places. The places named range across the state, east to west, north to south and, right here in Dripping Springs, Hamilton Pool Preserve.
According to the group, Hamilton Pool Preserve is suffering from its own popularity as a recreational destination as well as from minimal regulation and increased suburban development. In May 2007, Hamilton Pool and Hamilton Creek suffered major silt and erosion runoff during the construction of a residential subdivision upstream. The group calls the damage to Hamilton Pool, Davis Creek, Cripple Creek, Hamilton Creek and 10 unnamed tributaries in the surrounding area "devastating".
This reality check, combined with the Belterra and Bear Creek controversy, brings our thoughts around to Onion Creek. The impending Arrowhead Ranch subdivision, as well as the reported entertainment amphitheater planned for Leal Vineyard (that may service anywhere from 1,200 - 5,000 people, according to various reports), both border and surround Onion Creek.
