The photo does not lie! We spent several hours with Nina, left, last Saturday and belly rubs is what this girl wants! She is an adorable Terrier/Jack Russell mix who shows you her belly every chance she gets. We loved our time with Nina. She might be best as the only dog in the household, but if you have other dogs you can always bring them to the shelter to meet her and see how it goes! For more information on Nina and all the wonderful dogs and cats for adoption, please visit pawsshelter.org.
And be sure to save the date for PAWS' next Dinner By the Bite on November 4. Evening line-up announcement coming soon!
Dripping Springs is home to one of the most unique and beautiful wedding and event venues in the country. Camp Lucy just opened earlier this summer but has already generated serious buzz in the wedding industry and been featured in USA Today . Dripping's own Whit Hanks brought over from Vietnam two French Colonial-era chapels that were being torn down, and reconstructed them here on his family's property. The stunning green roof on the venue's pavilion is 1920s Ludowici tile rescued from the Bexar County Courthouse remodel. If you're a bride-to-be or looking for an event venue, the Bridal Open House at Camp Lucy on September 15 from 6:00PM - 8:00PM is an opportunity to tour the grounds while visiting with other vendors. An RSVP by September 10 to events@camplucy.com or (512) 894-4400 is requested. Camp Lucy is located at 3509 Creek Road. More about Camp Lucy at camplucy.com .

Proceeds from the auction will be awarded to a Hays County school or class for a water conservation project. The barrels are all now in place and their various trail locations will be announced soon (you've probably already seen one or two around town). In the meantime, Dripping artist Nancy Paton has provided a photographic sneak peek at her rain barrel art, The Confused Agave...It Thinks It's a Barrel Cactus. Known for her Agave series, Nancy's work exhibits her profound appreciation for the variations in color of the majestic agave.
Trail locations for viewing the barrels before the event will be posted on rainwaterrevival.com .
The first adult magazines we remember reading (that is, magazines that were not Highlights in the dentist's office) were National Geographic, Texas Parks and Wildlife, and one of the reasons for our mad cooking skills, Southern Living, which is why we are particularly excited that Southern Living just listed the Babble's sorghum pictorial at Onion Creek Farm by Melanie Cambron as a source for their article "In Season: Sorghum Syrup."
To see the pictorial on the Babble click here .

Word from a roving reporter getting scoop in the produce section (this is how we get the hard hitting news, folks) is that HEB will be putting in a tortilleria (located in front of the Sushi Bar). Fresh, hot tortillas to cradle our fajitas? We shall see.
Thank you, Carla!
This weather keeps toying with our emotions! After this weekend's blistering heat, these mountainous clouds dramatically rose early this morning above the hills of Dripping Springs. The promise of rain or just a big show? Photograph by Melanie Cambron.
Congratulations to Dripping's Pure Luck Farm & Dairy who won a 1st place for their Feta, 2nd place for their Hopelessly Blue, and a 3rd place for their Basket Chevre at the annual American Cheese Society Awards Ceremony last night in Seattle.
And good luck to Kyle Chandler, nominated for best lead actor in a drama for "Friday Night Lights", at tonight's Emmy Awards.
Dripping Springs High School plays Crockett tonight at Tiger Stadium. Football game kick-off is 7:30PM. Shuttle bus information here.
On Saturday, Hill Country Bible Church Dripping Springs hosts the Second Annual Dog Day Fair at Harrison Ranch Park from 9:00AM - Noon. The free event will feature rescue organizations, local vets, groomers, trainers and other pet services. Bring your four-legged family members for agility course demonstrations, grooming techniques, and more. Visit dogdays.hcbcds.com for additional information.
The Dripping Springs Farmers Market also continues on Saturday from 9:00AM - Noon. To receive the latest market updates, sign up here. The massive national egg recall is a reminder to know where your food comes from. The eggs sold by Onion Creek Farm, Lazy 8 Farms, and other local vendors at the market are from happy, loved, and cared for chickens. Studies show that farm fresh, free-range eggs have less cholesterol, less saturated fat, more Vitamin A and E, and extra Omega-3s. We also think they just taste better.

A free bus shuttle will run from the new high school to Tiger Stadium this Friday, August 27, starting at 6:00PM for the Dripping Springs High School football game against Crockett High School. Four buses will run continuously to help with traffic flow and provide additional parking. They will run until 30 minutes after the game ends or until all shuttle riders are transported. Those who wish to take advantage of the shuttle should park in one of the two lots nearest the main entrance to DSHS (staff lot and visitor lot). Kickoff for Friday's game is 7:30PM.
We spent some time at the PAWS shelter a couple of weeks ago getting to know the dogs so we can provide better "Dog of the Week" information. Seeing all those sweet dogs so desperate for new homes, and hearing their stories, is always emotional to say the least. One emotion when we saw Timon, left, was overwhelming joy. What was this little creature? Ewok? Teddy Ruxpin? Tiny, apricot Wolfman? Whatever he is, he is unforgettable and absolutely adorable. Offer him a t-r-e-a-t and he will plop down on his little bum. Because Timon is 10 years old, and despite his cuddly looks and sweet demeanor, he will get passed over simply because of his age, but he has plenty more years of love to give.
For more information on Timon and all the wonderful dogs and cats for adoption, please visit pawsshelter.org. And be sure to save the date for PAWS' next Dinner By the Bite on November 4. An exciting announcement coming soon, sure to ring your bell!
Leading up to the Rainwater Revival on October 9 here in Dripping Springs, rain barrels painted by 6 local artists will be displayed in locations around the area before being auctioned off at the event. Melodie is a Honored by the Texas Commission on the Arts as a Texas Original artist.
When all rain barrel art is completed, their locations for viewing before the event will be posted on rainwaterrevival.com.
Trudy's Texas Star went before the Planning and Zoning Commission last night at City Hall and their site plan for Ledgestone (near Nutty Brown) was approved to go forward to City Council.
Other local buzz is that a Thundercloud Subs and Reid's Cleaners will go in next to the HEB.

After days of unrelenting heat and weeks without rain, we must look a wee bit closer for bits of beauty and color in an otherwise drab landscape. The drought-tolerant Woolly Butterfly Bush loves full sun, little water and, true to its name, is a favorite of butterflies. But it was the tiny clusters of vibrant orange flowers atop silvery foliage that brought a smile at 103 degrees on this Sunday evening.
Just 30 days ago,17 year old Afifa arrived in Austin from Pakistan, where she lived under Taliban oppression that forbids girls to attend school or practice the arts. Despite unfathomable obstacles, Afifa persevered to learn English and keep up her studies. In the short month since her arrival, Afifa's life has taken flight. The bright, gracious, and articulate teen has been awarded a scholarship at Khabele College Preparatory School in Austin where she will be starting classes.
To help celebrate this new life, her new friends at Pink West here in Dripping Springs are hosting a day of henna on Saturday, August 28, from 10:00AM to 4:30PM where Afifa will introduce this ancient, beautiful, cultural art to western (and country western) women. Dressed in the vibrant, embellished clothing of their native Pakistan, Afifa and her sister will be doing everything from the smallest designs to full hands, arms, and feet.
Pink West (28515 RR 12) is scheduling appointments for Afifa now. Call (512) 858-9911 for more information.

The Dripping Springs Farmers Market is on Saturday from 9:00AM - Noon at The Triangle (RR 12 and 290). The market will continue every Saturday until November 20. This Saturday's market promises a new salsa vendor and live music. Marianne at Onion Creek Farm let us know that along with the last of the summer tomatoes (and a note that her fall tomato plants are coming along nicely), she will have basil and farm fresh eggs. And it will be an okra abbondanza! Marianne has an abundance of okra and expressed some doubt as to how much okra people can eat. We ask who wouldn't want to eat plenty of this storied member of the mallow family discovered around Ethiopia during 12 B.C. and cultivated by the ancient Egyptians. Okra flourished throughout North Africa and the Middle East where the seed pods were cooked eaten, and the seeds toasted, ground, and served as a coffee substitute. Okra is a powerhouse of valuable nutrients, a good source of Vitamin C, low in calories and fat-free (until our mom rolls it in cornmeal and fries it, but mama mia is it good!). Marianne has posted an abundance of okra recipes on her website from grilled to fried to stewed to baked. Get your okra on here .
For the latest market updates and produce availability be sure to sign up for Jo Ann Touchstone's update here.
In July, we reported that the old barber shop on Mercer would be reborn as The Barber Shop, an icehouse, giving hope to a revitalized downtown Dripping Springs. Today, at 4:00PM, a ribbon cutting will be held for the Homestead at the Dripping Springs on Mercer, a new bed and breakfast with a treasured historic past. Owned by residents Charles and Sherry Haydon, the site of the bed and breakfast was established in 1854 by John Moss, whose wife is credited with giving our community its name as tribute to the dripping springs located on the property. In 1871, B.J. Marshall moved the frame section of the main house to it current location and added a rock portion. Mr. Marshall became postmaster for the community and operated the post office out of the home. The Homestead was the stagecoach stop for the Austin to Fredericksburg postal route. Unfortunately, Mr. Marshall’s tenure as postmaster and master of the Homestead was short lived as he passed away in 1872, and Mrs. Marshall remarried to W.T. Chapman. It was Mr. Chapman who laid out the town site for Dripping Springs, and Mercer Street is named for their son, Mercer Chapman. The Marshall-Chapman clan owned the property until 1942 when John W. and Clara Wilson purchased the home and surrounding 77 acres. Today, the property remains with the Wilson descendants. Also on the property, sitting just to the east of the main house, affectionately known as “Clara’s House,” is the Butler Cabin. Although not an original part of the property, this historic cabin was built in the 1850s about four miles east of Dripping Springs. It was moved to its current location at the Homestead in 2007.
Next month, Mr. Haydon, a local historian and life-long resident of Dripping Springs (his dad was the town's second mayor) will be on hand to provide perspective on the city's fabled past as part of A Magical History Tour of downtown Dripping Springs. On Sunday afternoon, September 12, at 3:30PM, the Heritage Circle will host a narrated walking retrospective of Mercer Street that kicks off at 103 Old Fitzhugh Road, known locally as the Old Masonic Lodge, and known much earlier (1881), as the Dripping Springs Academy. There, attendees will take a photographic peek of the city’s treasures from the collection of Travis Garnett.
